Honored the Region of Eastern Macedonia - Thrace

The Region of Eastern Macedonia – Thrace was chosen as an honored Region by HELEXPO at the Detrop & Oenos Exhibitions 2023, since it has a huge authentic culinary wealth, which was formed through the wide variety of agro-food products produced by the land of the 5 prefectures of the Region, Evros, Rodopi, Xanthi, Drama and Kavala.
Among the most characteristic products of the Region are the catches from the Thracian Sea, with recipes such as alipasta, mackerel, fur, married sardine, mussel pilaf, saganaki herring, anchovy wrapped in vine leaves, and anchovy pilaf.
Sweets are also a characteristic element of the local gastronomy. The famous kourabiedes of Nea Karvali, the sweet walnut and spoon sweets of Thassos, the soujuk-loukoumi of Komotini and the carioca of Xanthi stand out. Standardization and certification, such as P.O.P. Thromba Thassos olive products, Makris olive oil and Nevrokopi potatoes, as well as PGI products, such as Thassos extra virgin olive oil and Nevrokopi beans, seal their quality superiority.
The local vineyard is spread throughout the Region, from Pangea and the Pieria valley with the certified PGE Pagea and PGE Kavala wines, to Thasos with the local wine (PGE Thassos) and tsipouro (Georgina variety), to the local varieties of Evros.
The list of famous local products is completed with the famous crab of Evros, the famous garlic of Vyssa, the goat of Samothrace, fresh and frozen vegetables, as well as with cheeses, alipasta and smoked products, the olive oil of Maroneia, the wines of Drama, with meat and dairy products, but also other products such as asparagus, legumes, grains, grapes, walnuts, chestnuts and honey.
A typical case of continuous progress and development of the primary production of this Region is olive oil, with special olive varieties and geographical areas, such as Makri and Maroneia, which are distinguished every year in international competitions.
